Situated on the eastern shores of Öxarfjörður is Kópasker, the only town in the district. It’s a small town by the sea with a population of about 170
inhabitants. January 13, 1976 a massive earthquake shook Öxarfjörður. These quakes originated 10 km southwest of Kópasker. It is said to have been 6,3 on the ricter scale and conflicted considerable property damage in Kópasker and in the countryside as well.
