Fáskrúðsfjörður is in the centre of Austfirðir and draws its name from an island near the fjord called Skrúður. The town in Fáskrúðsfjörður is called Búðir and is located at the inner end of the 15-km-long fjord. Employment is primarily based on the fishing industry along with smaller industrial companies and trade shops. Búðir was the main station for French fishermen in East Iceland both prior to and well after the turn of the century.
