The population of Neskaupstaður is around 1411 and most people are employed in the flourishing fishing industry. Small and big fishing ships enter the harbor. There is a hospital and a Gymnasium and good services in the town. To the east of the town, facing the ocean, there is a nature reserve and recreational area.
