The history of Akranes town is long, it goes all the way back to the period of settlement. Irish people settled there around 880. For the last few hundred years Akranes main industry has been fishing, but for the last years the proportion of trade and service has grown considerably. In Akranes you will find a blooming sports – and cultural life as well as interesting museums. The oldest concrete house in Iceland can be found in Akranes. Outdoor and nature lovers should find plenty for their interest. The closeness to the sea attracts a lot of different kind of birds. If you hike up to Akrafjall or on Langisandur you will find a magnificent view over Faxaflói, that leaves no one untouched. The west part of Akranes area is called Breiðin and there you can see monuments from the towns’ long history of fishing industry and in windy weather the area is surrounded by magnificent high sea waves. The most significant feature of the town and the inhabited area around today, is a spirited and diverse economy, a blooming sports life and a good daily life in a family friendly community. Akranes is close to the capital, only 50 km away. The Akranes hostel is situated in an old respectable house which used to be the towns pharmacy. It is located in the lower part of Akranes, close to the town square. The rooms are comfortable and nicely furnished with or without private bathrooms. The hostel has two fully equipped guestkitchens and a spacious lounge.
