Famous for its horseshoe shape. The outer walls left and right are approximately 3.5 km long. In between, the rock formation in the middle divides the canyon in two over more than half its length.
According to the legend, Ásbyrgi was formed when Odin's eight-legged horse put one of its feet down here. More likely, the canyon is a result of a glacial flooding of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river that occured only a few thousand years ago.
