Seydisfjordur a paradise in the east.
8/27/09 11:30
The east of Iceland is covered in high mountains, deep fjords and waterfalls gushing from the hills. The road number one goes in and out of each fjord and leads the traveler through a deep natural meditation. There is excitement when you pass a steep mountain and you see a sign “rocks may fall on you the next 2 km”. And then when you get thirsty you may always run out of the car and drink from the spring water leaking from the mountains.

There is on town that does not connect to road nr. 1 as it is in the end of a road. This is Seidisfjodur. You reach the place by going over the mountain next to Egilsstadir and down a deep fjord an there the town is. It is mostly known now days for being the place Smyril line come to the harbor of Iceland and is the way for tourist to travel to Iceland by sea.

Kaffi Lára – very cozy local coffee house but turns into a fun karaoke place in the evenings.
Skaftafell – coffeehouse with internet access. Serves great pizza at a reasonable price.

Alcohol shop is located in the gas station but is open at strange hours. Sometimes only from 16:00 – 17:00, you will have to get more information about that from the locals.

The people are very friendly and the main objective with tourist is not trying to get money but more to give visitors a good feeling about the place. It has been know that travelers have been so fascinated by the place that they decided to get there a second home. Best example of that is the famous artiste Dieter Roth but he boucht a house there located at an old harbor. It is said that every morning he took a walk to the hotel Snæfell and got served double vodka to start the day. He carried around with him always cash and had a bundle of it in his pocket. When he was at the bar in the evenings at winter time he used to pay the whole bar for the locals just to show his appreciation of the companionship.

Another celebrity to have stayed at Seydisfjordur is not the most fascinating of fellows but it was Charles Manson who lead the Manson family in Hollywood in the late 1960’s. He was told to have been working in the fish industries in Seydisfjordur but was not a very social kind of fellow. At least he did not get anyone from Seydisfjordur to his Manson family.
