Greetings

Icelandic people will usually greet strangers by shaking their hand firmly. It is often considered quite rude or disrespectful to offer a weak and/or sweaty hand and may be considered as lack of character.

Many locals are bound to be uncomfortable greeting a stranger with a kiss at first encounter. Once the relationship grows into friendship it is not uncommon to greet with a kiss and perhaps even a hug. Icelandic men tend to pat good male friends on the back instead of resorting to kisses and hugs. Getting a pat on the back is however loaded with meaning as it is their way to show affection for each other.
