Borgarfjordur Eystri

Driving a mere hour from Ring Road No. 1 at Egilsstaðir will take you to the epitome of beautiful Icelandic countryside. Here at road's end in Borgarfjörður, northernmost of Iceland's East Fjords, colourful nature and not least the local residents await to provide you with a wonderful visit to their enchanting world. Although coming to the area could give some people an escape from reality, those living here know it is reality itself that visitors will have the chance to experience.
For instance, everyone who has tried it knows that life's true meaning lies in helping a farmer in the spring, when lambs are entering the world and nature is waking up. . People say the same about taking part in the roundup, when autumn colours gleam and grab the eye.
Fishermen stay busy too, bringing their day's catch for you to enjoy at the local restaurant. Its menu lets you live on nature, as Borgarfjörður residents have done for over a thousand years.

However, they have also learned that to live on nature you have to treat it like a friend. At Hafnarhólmi on the south shores of the fjord, the small-craft harbour has earned the international Blue Flag, in recognition of its clean facilities and visitor accessibility. The harbour vicinity is home to 10,000 pairs of puffins, and you can walk to their home (or at least its doorstep) without disturbing their daily lives. They seem to love modelling for photographers, who can easily view them from the special facilities for observing the puffin and kittiwake nesting grounds.

The eco-friendly Borgarfjörður community has a philosophy of sustainability and close relations with nature, making it a great place to relax and feel your own dreams come true. For most people, this is simplified by a little isolation, while the peace and wilderness of our deserted fjords and inlets offer a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.

This is an area that you have to experience: Borgarfjörður and its environs, considered by many to be Iceland's most beautiful countryside.
