Neskaupstadur

The road from Eskifjörður over to Norðfjörður or Neskaupstaður as the town is usually called, is a very beautiful road and just the drive over the mountain is worth the visit. You have to pass one of the oldest tunnels in Iceland that have only one lane. Before and sometimes now in the winter the town is isolated, this has had impact on the culture there which is very lively. Norðfjörður is known for lively music scene, of which the main impresario is the local blues, rock and jazz club Brján. The music town Norðfjörður has for example one concert each day over the summer time, ask the locals for the concert of the day.
Norðfjöjrður is the most popoulus of the Fjarðabyggð communities and there you will find everything a tourist would need, hiking trails in Norðfjörður country park which is renowned for this stunning natural beauty and diverse birdlife and fauna, café like Nesbær which offers delicious refreshments and on its walls there are exhibitions by local artists.
Hotels, museum that houses three different museums,, outdoor swimming pool, beautiful nature sights like Páskahellir which is positioned down by the beech or. mountain view, activity, things to see and do. The Rauðubjörg cliff - Rauðubjörg Is a stunning red- coloured rhyolite cliff face forming part of the coastline In Norðfjarðarflói bay.

Safnahúsið: Located down by the harbour it houses three different museums: Natural history museum, Tryggvi Ólafsson art collection and maritime museum.

 

   

 

Sailing trip with Fjarðaferðir and enjoy the wonderful views of the colourful Norðfjörður bay mountains, seeing caves, islands and beeches teeming with birds. Perhaps even a reindeer or catch fish.  

 

   

 

Páskahellir: Take the stroll to Easter cave, where the Sun dances in the pristine water. Páskahellir is positioned down by the beech and to get there you have to climb down a ladder that will lead you into the cave. Inside the cave there are holes that are the fossilized remains of trees that existed 12 million years ago. Outside the cave are all sorts of lava formation, crystals and rocks of different kinds.

 

   

 

Avalance protection wall: Above the town is an immense man made structure which prevents avalanches from falling on the town from the mountains above it. It is possible to drive up to it and take a closer look. From there is a great view of the town and fjord.
